| Sensei Bruce Raney started training in ju jitsu in 1970 in Larkspur California under Del Esposte Sensei. In 1972 he began Judo, competing at the San Francisco Institute of Judo. He also took boxing at the College of Marin while he continued to study an obscure style of ju jitsu. Upon attending San Jose State University, he became a member of the varsity judo team, and trained with them for 2 years.
After graduation from San Jose State, Sensei Raney began train with Professor Sig Kufferath. At Sig’s suggestion Sensei Raney went back to competition judo with Professor Willy Cahill. Sensei Raney and several others also started their own Danzan Ryu dojo, to better reflect the esoteric and practical principles of ju jitsu and judo, expressed by Professors Kufferath, Jay and Cahill.
Over the years, Sensei Raney has had the privilege to train with many great judo and ju jitsu teachers worldwide. After moving to Hawaii in 1998, he met and then spent countless hours training in the sand under a tree with Bob Reish and company, as well as many enjoyable hours with Professor Jack Wheat.
Sensei Raney obtained a ju jitsu shodan in 1972, currently holds a sandan in Judo, sandan in Nihan Ju Jitsu from Sato Sensei in Japan, a rokkyudan in Danzan Ryu Ju Jitsu from Kilohana Martial Arts Association, and a certificate of achievement from Reish Sensei for his many hours of non rank training in the Chinese, Filipino and Thai fighting styles.
His current Moko Moko (or “rough’em up”) style focuses on using the arts in a practical way. Practice includes moving throwing, locking, grappling, escapes, percussion, trapping hands, choking and massage.We believe that these arts are comprised of contact by their very nature. Movement, respect for your partner and “leather touch” are necessary components of practice. |
